Could you introduce your project and explain how it aligns with SDG 16?

My work is primarily rooted in my involvement with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), where I contribute to various initiatives under their mandate to promote justice, the rule of law, and strong institutions. One of the key projects I am involved in focuses on addressing arbitrary detention, an issue that infringes on fundamental human rights and undermines trust in legal systems globally.

Through my engagement with GenJust, a youth initiative supported by UNODC, I have had the opportunity to contribute to critical dialogues and youth consultations, such as COP12 UNTOC and the preparations of the 15th Crime Congress, where I represented the voices of young people advocating for sustainable solutions to crime and justice challenges. Additionally, I was honored to organize the first-ever Mexico Youth Consultation fostering discussions and solutions on crime prevention and justice within my country.

This project directly aligns with SDG 16 by addressing issues such as arbitrary detention, transnational organized crime, and corruption, my work contributes to creating a more just and equitable global society.

I have been able to advocate for systemic changes, collaborate with stakeholders at both the local and international levels, and inspire youth to take an active role in shaping justice and security policies. These efforts are instrumental in building trust in institutions and ensuring that justice systems prioritize fairness, equity, and accountability.

What specific aspects of peace-building or justice promotion does your project focus on?

My project focuses on addressing arbitrary detention practices by promoting fair legal processes, advocating for human rights, and ensuring the alignment of local practices with international standards under SDG 16. This includes fostering youth-led initiatives to amplify marginalized voices and strengthen community engagement.

How did your project engage with local communities to promote peace and justice?

The project actively engaged with local communities through workshops, consultations, and dialogue sessions, ensuring the inclusion of youth, and civil society actors. These activities aimed to raise awareness of rights, empower participants to seek justice, and create actionable solutions tailored to the community's unique challenges.

Can you share any examples of how your project contributed to resolving conflicts or reducing violence?

One notable outcome was the establishment of a community mediation program that helped resolve disputes related to resource distribution. This program reduced tensions and violence by training local leaders in conflict resolution and providing accessible pathways to justice for all parties.

Did your project encounter any challenges related to promoting peace and justice, and if so, how were they addressed?

A major challenge was building trust with community members who had experienced systemic injustice. To address this, the project prioritized transparency and local leadership, involving respected community figures as intermediaries and ensuring consistent follow-up to demonstrate commitment.

What role did partnerships play in the success of your project related to SDG 16?

Partnerships were pivotal, as they allowed me to leverage expertise, resources, and networks. Collaborations with international organizations like the UNODC and local NGOs provided credibility, while academic partnerships contributed research and training support.

How did your project advocate for the rule of law and access to justice within the communities you worked with?

The project advocated for the rule of law by educating communities about their rights, creating legal aid channels, and working with local authorities to improve transparency and accountability. Public campaigns and storytelling were also employed to humanize justice issues and build broader awareness.

Were there any innovative approaches or strategies used in your project to foster peace and justice?

Adopted digital tools for community reporting and education, such as mobile apps that enabled citizens to report rights violations and access legal resources. Additionally, art and storytelling workshops were used to foster empathy and understanding among conflicting parties.

How did you measure the impact or effectiveness of your project in promoting strong institutions and peaceful societies?

Impact was measured through quantitative and qualitative metrics, including reductions in reported incidents of violence, feedback from community surveys, and the number of legal cases resolved. Regular monitoring and evaluation sessions helped track progress and adapt strategies as needed.

Reflecting on your project, what are some key insights or lessons you've gained about promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions, and how do you plan to apply them in the future?

Key insights include the importance of inclusive participation, the value of local leadership, and the necessity of sustained engagement. Moving forward, I plan to apply these lessons by integrating more capacity-building initiatives and exploring long-term partnerships to ensure the scalability and sustainability of future projects.
