As an SDG Reporter and a 9th-grade student, I have been exploring how India is working towards achieving Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Goal 8 focuses on promoting sustained economic growth and providing decent work opportunities for all. Through my research, I learned that the Government of India has implemented several programs to meet this goal. Here's a summary of what I found, along with my observations.

1. Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme

The PLI Scheme helps industries grow by offering incentives for increasing production. This encourages companies to set up factories in India, which creates more jobs. I feel this is a great step because it not only boosts manufacturing but also helps young people like us see a future in industries such as electronics and automobiles.

2. PM Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

PMEGP is a program designed to help people start their own small businesses. It provides financial assistance to rural and urban entrepreneurs. I think this is important because it supports people who have good ideas but don’t have the money to start their businesses.

3. Skill India

Skill India is one of my favorite initiatives because it focuses on training people in skills that are useful in real life. This program ensures that young people, especially those who don’t get formal education, can still get jobs by learning specific skills. I believe that as students, we should all be aware of how this can shape our future.

4. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

PMKVY provides short-term courses to help people learn new skills and find jobs. It’s part of the larger Skill India movement. I noticed that this scheme not only benefits job seekers but also encourages students to learn more practical skills alongside academic studies.

5. National Skill Development Mission (NSDM)

The NSDM is an initiative to create a large network of skill-training centers across India. It works with both public and private organizations to train people. I think this mission is a good example of teamwork between the government and businesses to help people become job-ready.

6. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)

PMMY is a loan scheme for small businesses. It helps people, especially women and young entrepreneurs, to start or expand their ventures. As a student, I feel inspired to see how this scheme promotes entrepreneurship and gives hope to many people who want to create their own path.

7. National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)

This scheme focuses on apprenticeships, which means people can work and learn at the same time. I feel this is a very practical way of learning because it allows people to gain hands-on experience while earning.

8. Skill Development Mission

This mission aims to make sure that India’s workforce is prepared for new job opportunities in emerging industries. I believe that preparing for the future is crucial, especially as technology is changing the way we work.

9. Deendayal Upadhyaya Antyodaya Yojana

This scheme helps the poorest sections of society by offering skill training and sustainable livelihood opportunities. It shows that no one is left behind in India’s growth story.

10. National Urban Development Mission

This initiative focuses on improving cities by creating better infrastructure and jobs. As a student, I think developing urban areas is essential because cities are the hubs of innovation and opportunities.

11. Udyami Bharat Scheme

This scheme supports entrepreneurs by providing mentorship and funding. I feel it’s great to see the government encouraging people to think creatively and start their businesses, which can provide jobs to others as well.

My Observation

While studying these initiatives, I realized that the Government of India is making a strong effort to ensure that everyone, from rural areas to urban centers, gets a chance to participate in the country’s growth. Programs like Skill India and PMMY are not just about jobs but also about building confidence and self-reliance in people.

As a student, I feel that schools can play a role by introducing career awareness programs and skill-based activities. This will help students like me understand how these initiatives can benefit us in the future. I am inspired to see how India is working hard to achieve SDG 8, and I believe that with everyone’s participation, we can create a country where growth and opportunities are truly for all.
