Affordable and clean energy is vital for a sustainable future. SDG 7 focuses on ensuring that everyone has access to reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. As an SDG Reporter, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the amazing work India is doing to achieve this goal. The Government of India, through NITI Aayog, has launched many initiatives, and here’s what I discovered.

1. SAUBHAGYA Scheme
The SAUBHAGYA scheme ensures electricity for every household, especially in rural areas. This has brought light (literally!) to millions of homes, changing lives forever. I think this is an incredible step because electricity is not just a utility but a basic right.
2. PM Ujjwala Scheme
Through this scheme, women in poor families receive free LPG connections. It’s helping families switch from using wood and coal to clean cooking gas. I noticed that it’s also making kitchens safer and reducing health problems caused by smoke.
3. UJALA Scheme
This program provides LED bulbs at affordable prices. LEDs use less electricity and last longer. I feel this is a smart idea because it helps families save money while protecting the environment.
4. PM-KUSUM Scheme
The PM-KUSUM scheme helps farmers install solar pumps to water their fields. This means farmers can save money on diesel and use clean energy instead. I think it’s a win-win for both farmers and the planet!
5. Rooftop Solar Programme
This program encourages people to install solar panels on their rooftops. Imagine producing your own electricity at home! I’ve seen how this can make families less dependent on regular electricity while reducing bills.
6. Green Energy Corridors (GEC)
This is a big project to connect renewable energy to the national grid. It’s important because renewable energy like solar and wind is often generated in remote areas. I feel this is key to making green energy accessible everywhere.
7. Bio-Energy Programme
India is also turning agricultural waste and other organic material into energy through this program. I love the idea of turning trash into something useful—energy! It’s a great way to manage waste and produce clean fuel.
8. National Green Hydrogen Mission
This new initiative is all about producing hydrogen using renewable energy. Hydrogen is clean and can be used in industries and vehicles. I think this is a futuristic project that shows India is serious about sustainability.
9. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY)
This scheme provides electricity to villages and ensures a steady power supply. It even separates electricity for farms and households. I think this helps rural areas grow and develop faster.
10. National Solar Mission
India is working towards a huge goal of producing 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. This mission promotes solar energy use across the country. I believe this will make India a leader in renewable energy.
11. FAME Scheme
The FAME scheme promotes electric vehicles by providing incentives. With EVs, we can reduce pollution and carbon emissions. I hope this will make clean transportation more common in the future.
12. PM Surya Ghar Mukt Bijli Yojana
This program helps families produce their own solar power. It’s amazing to see how people can generate electricity on their rooftops. This could be a game-changer for energy independence.
13. Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS)
This scheme supports the use of electric vehicles and charging stations. I believe this will make cities cleaner and quieter while reducing fuel usage.
My Observations
As I researched these initiatives, I realized how much effort India is putting into achieving SDG 7. From providing clean cooking gas to promoting solar energy and electric vehicles, every step makes a difference. I’ve also noticed that these programs not only help the environment but also improve lives, especially in rural areas.
I think the most inspiring part of these initiatives is how they encourage people to adopt clean energy in their daily lives. It shows that big changes can happen when governments, communities, and individuals work together. As a student, I feel proud of my country’s efforts and motivated to spread awareness about clean energy. Together, we can light up the future sustainably!
