Hello, everyone! I’m Vaishnavi, a 9th-grade SDG Reporter, and today I’m writing about how the Government of India is working hard to achieve SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Clean water and proper sanitation are basic needs, and the government has introduced several programs to make sure everyone has access to them. Here’s a quick summary of the key initiatives:

1. Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM): Aims to make India free of open defecation and improve sanitation infrastructure.
2. Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM): Ensures every household gets clean drinking water through tap connections by 2024.
3. AMRUT 2.0 Scheme: Focuses on improving water supply, sewerage systems, and water recycling in urban areas.
4. PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): Encourages farmers to use water efficiently with techniques like drip and sprinkler irrigation.
5. Mission Amrit Sarovar: Works to restore and create water bodies for rainwater storage and groundwater recharge.
6. Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain: Promotes rainwater harvesting with the message, "Catch the Rain, Where it Falls, When it Falls."
7. Atal Bhujal Yojana: Focuses on managing groundwater in areas where it is being overused.
8. National River Conservation Programme (NRCP): Reduces pollution in rivers by building sewage treatment plants.
9. Namami Gange: Integrated Ganga Conservation Mission: Works on cleaning and conserving the Ganga and its tributaries.
10. National Perspective Plan (NPP): Transfers water from surplus rivers to regions that face water shortages.
My Observation
While reading about these programs, I felt proud of how much effort the government is putting into solving India’s water and sanitation challenges. Some of these programs, like the Jal Jeevan Mission, have already made a difference in villages where people now have tap water for the first time.
However, I also think we all need to do our part. Simple actions like fixing leaking taps, using water wisely, and keeping our surroundings clean can make a big difference. Schools can play a big role too, by promoting rainwater harvesting and spreading awareness.
Achieving SDG 6 isn’t just the government’s job—it’s a responsibility we all share. Together, we can create a future where clean water and proper sanitation are available to everyone!
