The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations emphasize the importance of creating peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. Goal 16, which focuses on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, is crucial in ensuring accountable governance, transparency, and equal access to justice. The NITI Aayog report highlights key initiatives undertaken in India to achieve this goal.

Key Highlights from the Report

1. PRAGATI 2.0: Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation

PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation) is a digital platform aimed at enhancing coordination between the government and various stakeholders. It helps in resolving public grievances, monitoring major infrastructure projects, and ensuring faster implementation of policies. PRAGATI 2.0 focuses on real-time problem-solving to improve governance efficiency.

2. Modernization of Police Forces

A well-equipped and trained police force is essential for maintaining law and order. The report emphasizes the importance of modernizing police forces with advanced technology, better training, and upgraded infrastructure. Digital policing, forensic advancements, and smart surveillance systems are being implemented to enhance safety and security.

3. RTI (Right to Information) Act

Transparency is a key aspect of strong institutions. The Right to Information (RTI) Act empowers citizens to seek information about government actions and decisions. The NITI Aayog report highlights how RTI has strengthened democracy in India by promoting accountability and reducing corruption.

4. Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan

This initiative focuses on empowering local self-governance in rural areas. By strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), the government aims to enhance participatory democracy at the grassroots level. The report suggests that better governance at the village level will lead to improved public service delivery and local development.

5. Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS)

Ensuring child safety and protection is a crucial part of SDG 16. The Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) provides care, protection, and rehabilitation for vulnerable children. It also includes initiatives to prevent child trafficking and abuse, ensuring a safe environment for children to grow and thrive.

6. Development of Judicial Infrastructure

For a just society, a strong judiciary is essential. The report highlights the development of judicial infrastructure, including the establishment of Gram Nyayalayas (Village Courts), which ensure faster and more accessible justice for rural communities. This initiative aims to reduce the backlog of cases and bring justice closer to the people.

My observation

As a young SDG journalist, I believe that achieving SDG 16 is crucial for India's progress. The initiatives mentioned in the NITI Aayog report are steps in the right direction, but there are still challenges to overcome:

1. Awareness and Accessibility: While RTI and Gram Nyayalayas are great initiatives, many people in rural areas are unaware of their rights or find the legal process difficult to navigate. Awareness campaigns should be intensified.

2. Youth Participation in Governance: The report does not emphasize the role of youth in strengthening institutions. If students and young citizens are educated about governance, they can contribute more actively to policymaking and justice reforms.

3. Technology for Transparency: Digital platforms like PRAGATI 2.0 are excellent tools, but more focus on cybersecurity and data protection is necessary to prevent misuse of information.

4. Police and Judicial Reforms: Modernizing police forces is essential, but the trust deficit between law enforcement and the public must be addressed. Police training should also focus on human rights and community policing.

5. Ending Child Exploitation: While the Integrated Child Protection Scheme is a great initiative, strict implementation and monitoring are required to ensure every child in India is safe from exploitation, abuse, and trafficking.
