The world is facing a severe environmental crisis, with deforestation, habitat destruction, and desertification threatening biodiversity and ecosystems. Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Life on Land, aims to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. India has taken several initiatives under NITI Aayog’s vision to achieve this goal, ensuring a greener and healthier future for all.

Key Government Initiatives for Goal 15
1. National Afforestation Programme (National Mission for a Green India)-
This initiative focuses on afforestation and eco-restoration of degraded forests to increase tree cover and improve biodiversity. By planting more trees, India aims to combat climate change and provide sustainable livelihoods to forest-dependent communities.
2. Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats-
Protecting wildlife is essential for ecological balance. This program strengthens conservation efforts for important wildlife species and their habitats, ensuring that animals like tigers, elephants, and rhinos thrive in their natural surroundings.
3. Project Tiger-
Launched in 1973, Project Tiger is one of India’s most successful conservation programs. With focused efforts on habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and community involvement, India has seen a steady rise in tiger populations.
4. Project Elephant-
Similar to Project Tiger, this initiative aims to conserve elephants and their habitats. It also addresses human-elephant conflicts, ensuring peaceful coexistence between wildlife and communities.
5. Nagar Van Yojana-
Cities are rapidly expanding, leading to the loss of green spaces. The Nagar Van Yojana promotes the development of urban forests in cities to enhance greenery, reduce pollution, and provide recreational spaces for people.
6. National Action Programme to Combat Desertification-
Desertification is a major concern in arid and semi-arid regions of India. This program focuses on restoring degraded land, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and preventing soil erosion.
7. National Agroforestry Policy-
Agroforestry is an innovative approach that integrates trees with agriculture to improve farm productivity while protecting the environment. This policy encourages farmers to plant trees on their farmlands, ensuring economic and ecological benefits.
My Observations
While these initiatives are commendable, I have observed that awareness about afforestation and conservation is still low among the general public, especially students. Many people unknowingly harm the environment by cutting trees, using plastic excessively, and polluting water bodies. Schools should actively participate in tree-planting drives and environmental awareness programs.
During a recent visit to a nearby forest area, I saw the impact of deforestation firsthand—fallen trees, displaced animals, and dry riverbeds. It made me realize the urgent need for conservation. If we continue to destroy our forests, future generations might never see the rich biodiversity we take for granted today.
As a student, I believe we can contribute by planting trees, reducing waste, and spreading awareness. Every small step counts! Let’s work together to achieve Goal 15 and make our planet greener and healthier.
