Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, focusing on responsible consumption and production, plays a vital role in shaping a sustainable future. The NITI Aayog report outlines India’s efforts to ensure that resources are used wisely, waste is minimized, and energy is generated in eco-friendly ways. As a 9th-grade student and SDG reporter, I was excited to explore these initiatives, and here’s what I learned.

1. Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE):
This initiative is all about changing the way we live to protect the environment. It encourages people to make small changes, like reducing waste, conserving energy, and avoiding single-use plastics. As a student, I think this is something we can all start doing right now, even in our schools and homes. For example, I’ve begun carrying reusable water bottles and encouraging my friends to do the same.
2. National Policy on Biofuels:
India’s National Policy on Biofuels focuses on creating fuels from plants and waste. It not only reduces pollution but also helps farmers use agricultural waste efficiently. I was amazed to learn how things like sugarcane and crop residues can be turned into biofuels. Imagine how much cleaner our air could be if everyone used these fuels instead of petrol or diesel!
3. PM-KUSUM Scheme:
This scheme provides solar-powered pumps to farmers, which not only saves electricity but also reduces their costs. When I discussed this with my grandfather, who owns a small farm, he said solar pumps would help farmers like him immensely. It was interesting to realize how renewable energy can directly improve people’s lives while protecting the planet.
4. Renewable Energy Global Investment Promotion Meet and Expo (RE-Invest):
This event attracts businesses and investors to fund renewable energy projects in India. It’s exciting to see how companies are stepping up to support clean energy solutions. I feel proud knowing India is becoming a leader in solar and wind energy.
5. National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF):
This fund supports projects that promote renewable energy and eco-friendly technologies. I think such initiatives are crucial for cities like mine, where pollution levels are rising. With more awareness, we can all support cleaner energy systems.
My Observations
As I learned about these initiatives, I realized how small efforts can lead to big changes. For example, our school has started composting food waste, which aligns perfectly with the idea of responsible consumption. I also noticed that while these schemes are excellent, many people, especially in rural areas, may not know about them. It made me think that we, as students, can spread awareness about these programs in our communities.
Another observation I made is how much our everyday choices matter. Whether it’s choosing public transport over personal vehicles or avoiding single-use plastics, everyone can contribute to SDG 12. I’ve started making posters in school to encourage such habits among my peers.
